PRESENTATION / PITCHING

The whole point of a pitch is to bring the person/people your pitching to up to date as fast as possible without overwhelming them with to much information or boring them into loosing interest.

To help with everybody's pitching skills and over all presentation skills, a few lessons where put aside to cover it as it is not just a useful skill to have in general but a good skill to have in the media industry e.g if you where to ever pitch a script/film or project idea to a strangers/employers or financial backer.

Before we went on to write our professional studies report everyone was tasked with creating a 10 slide power-point on the subject of there report and given only 10 seconds per slide to explain what was on the slide and how it related to there report.

My Report was on the subject of film and digital and my presentation basically jumped backwards and forwards between the two first mentioning film and then the digital alternative to that.

During my pitch I found on some slides I had more to say than others and because i am not good at speaking on the spot I stuttered/paused a lot trying to think of something to say but when I could think of something to say I think I was able to get my point across well enough for the class to understand what I was doing for my report.

NEWS REPORTER VS SHOP ASSISTANTAnother task in professional studies was communication skills for this we had to to role play as either a news reporter or shop assistant on the phone.The person who acted as the news reporter had to catch the shop assistant out and make them slip up there words through asking questions about a shipment of bird flu infected chickens that the shop was supposed to be selling to the public still.I played the role of the shop assistant against Tori who played the role of the news reporter everyone's call was filmed and shown upstairs in the seminar room although I did slip up on something I said she never picked up on it and I got away with it. I think I did well in this task and a lot of my answers although trying being dead serious came of as dead pan humor to the class when reviewing the video back. My favorite reply was "could the apparent man infected with bird flu not just have food poisoning from re heating the meat" to which Tori replied "you cant re heat meat" so I responded with "I know that you know that does this ill man know that"I enjoyed this task and since I was one of the few to not get caught out by slipping up my words even though I did I think I did surprisingly well in this task.

Professional Study trip (Newcastle)

Newcastle Trip

The whole class spent a day out in Newcastle whilst there we visited the Baltic art gallery which is situated just next to the river and the Tyneside Cinema which is more closer to the center of the city we also had a chance to walk around and reccie film locations.

I felt that the the Tyneside Cinema was more closely related to my course being the last remaining full operational newsreel theatre in the UK which not only specializes in vintage news show reels but mainstream and lesser known foreign films as well as that If I ever wanted to I could even potentially have a future film of my own shown there.

It well as being an active cinema and cafe it was also a museum with displays of old camera equipment and other objects and you got a real sense of how far cinema has come and how diverse it can be walking around.

While on the tour of the multi story building we had a chance to see some vintage news reels,the kind of cameras that would of filmed those newsreels and last but not least the buildings constantly blending of new and old architecture which allows the building to stay up to date and modern but also have a hint of the past behind it at the same time.

The other place we visited had little to nothing to do with my course I feel but was interesting none the less

it had a lot of art from up coming artists and a big stained glass window project that was on display 

AVC CAMERA (PANASONIC AG-HMC151)

For our live client projects we need the finished product to come of as professional as possible so to achieve that we will be swapping out the cameras that where used for the Loc/Doc drama and only be using the AVC cameras which is the easy alternative to its real name the Panasonic AG-HMC151.

One of the main advantages this camera has over the others is in can shoot in HD either at 1080p or 720p also instead of using tapes this camera can take an SD Card which means not only can you get more than 60 minutes of footage shot but there is no need to sit and wait for a tape to capture in real time.

Notes

• Lowest class SD Card is class 4 its recommended to get a class 10 
• 2 record buttons one on top one on the side one has switch to turn it on
• Phantom power drains battery
• SD Card needs re formatting and footage needs backed up by everyone
• To reformat card on camera go to card functions menu  
• Can only do playback on setting clip was recorded on 
• USB input for copying file only and HDMI can be used if needed to plug into a TV
• Shutter speed goes to 1000
• Lines on camera monitor show safety crop zones
• Input 2 down for mono
• Shutter of means its set to default

Tech Demo: Fostex FR2

Fostex FR2

In today's tech demo (30/1/15) Lee talked about the Fostex FR2 field recorder which is worth around £1000 and is designed for recording sound while filming both indoors and alternatively location. On location it can actually be carried around by the sound op in a bag that you wear like a satchel from Indiana Jones which suspends the device and bag down on one side of your waste.

When it comes to powering the device the batteries get drained very quickly so if you are able to plug into the mains of the building/location you are at if you are unable to do so you will need to acquire 8x Duracell Batteries which only give you 30-40 Minutes of power so to be on the safe side it is always recommended to have plenty of spares at hand.

F Card - Will not break before the device its designed so if anything goes wrong all the stuff recorded will be safe because re shooting may be more costly than just replacing the Fostex especially if its on a big budget movie. A 4GB F card will record 3-4 hours or 14 hours

Switch of before adding the card and if there is a need to there is an emergency eject button also always format card before use to actually format the card on the Fostex go to the menu down to to disk format and accept if something pops for whatever reason and you don't want to accept either switch it of or click the home button to get out of the menu.

And if you want to playback something you can find that by going on the menu and down to file

NOTES

• Always take a record of the time code
• 6 seconds before record can be captured
• Don't use phantom power unless needed 
• When recording stereo and only used one mic to record make sure to let the editor know
• Can have horrible hissing sound all way through and it wont be recognized unless there is gaps
• Use full jack headphones or an adapter on mini jack headphones
• Use mono input for one mic
• 20 is the lowest you want to go for a human voice recording

Sitting in a computer room alone (RYAN 1) sits typing away. To show the gradual passing of time a clock spins (TIME LAPSE), as time goes on (RYAN 1) gets tired-er and tired-er and eventually falls asleep. Whilst lying in the chair asleep a figure walks behind (RYAN 1) and taps HIM on the shoulder, (RYAN 1) turns around and looks up to find its another (RYAN 2) looking down drinking from a bottle called (Product Placement).

"Who the hell are you?"

RYAN 2 

"I am you, well more specifically social you"

(RYAN 1) Has a flashback featuring snippets of video and pictures of social (RYAN 2)

"OH GREAT I have finally gone insane and who pops up just what I need another me not least a social one what are you doing here then shouldn’t you be out being (Bunny finger ears) social or something"

"I would love to be but recently I have been talking to some people about you well more specifically us"

Me Myself and I (Treatment)

Whilst working on a computer with small items showing the mise en scene of my life I fall asleep and get woken up by (ME/SIDE OF MY PERSONALITY) E.G Social Me, when i ask who it is social me/whatever me will say at which point I have a flashback including snippets of videos and pictures showing that side of my life another 2 copies of me show up showing another 2 sides/personality = more flashbacks and they wind up talking to me.

After this happens i wake up not sure what happened log off the computer which will show the script title page for Me myself and I starring Ryan Siggers X3 I then leave the room turn of the lights and credits role.
